SSO Performs Hailstork’s Epitaph for a Man Who Dreamed & Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with Metropolitan Opera Competition Winner

On May 13 & 15, the Stanford Symphony Orchestra and Stanford Symphonic Chorus will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor, “Resurrection”, under the direction of Paul Phillips. The vocal soloists in the Mahler are soprano Esther Tonea and alto Malin Fritz Walrod. On May 1, Esther Tonea, an Adler Fellow at SF Opera, was selected on May 1 as one of six winners of this year’s Metropolitan Opera Annual Laffont Competition, and these will be her first performances since the competition. Malin Fritz Walrod has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in The Magic Flute (Mozart), Die Walküre (Wagner), and Moses und Aron (Schoenberg), and with numerous orchestras and opera companies throughout the US and abroad. Epitaph for a Man Who Dreamed (in memoriam Martin Luther King, Jr.) by Adolphus Hailstork will open the concert.
