Description. The class has eighteen minor homework assignments due throughout the quarter and graded by completion. Note that assignments which are handed in but reflect a clear lack of effort will be marked as incomplete. Unless explicitly instructed otherwise, homework assignments will be handed in as PDF files through Canvas.
Homework 1.2
Generate five topic ideas for your Paper and Talk. Note that your Paper and Talk will share this one topic. For each of your five ideas, write a couple of sentences explaining the main result you would write about and present.
Homework 2.1
Choose your topic for your Paper and Talk, find three corresponding sources, and identify a key theorem and accompanying example.
Homework 2.3
Turn in a preliminary draft of your Paper. It does not need to be perfect, but you should have a workable version ready so that you can receive constructive feedback. In particular, all sections of your final document should be present.
Homework 3.1
Review two other students' Paper drafts. You should provide written comments which are closely tailored to their submissions.
Schedule a meeting with the TA to take place by Class 4.2 (October 14) to present a draft of your Talk and receive feedback, including guidance on responding to questions. Confirm the appointment with the instructor by forwarding the relevant email. Note that the TA expects a draft presentation. You will have time to revise it before recording and submitting your practice video.

Submit three written questions for the guest speaker.
Homework 4.2
After presenting a draft of your Talk to the TA by Class 4.2, turn in a video of a subsequent practice run. Ensure the sound is audible and the board is visible. Include a short paragraph identifying the main feedback you received and describing the changes you made in response. You may also explain why you chose not to follow a suggestion. Submit the video and paragraph. Note that the video is not graded on the quality of the presentation. This is simply another way for you to get practice.
Homework 4.3
In preparation for the Article, schedule your interview with your assigned graduate student to happen before Class 6.1. Confirm the appointment with the instructor by forwarding the relevant email. If you are still awaiting a reply, submit a record of your timely outreach so that the instructor can help arrange the interview.
Homework 5.1
Turn in a one-page brief outlining five potential Final Project ideas. For each idea, include a couple of sentences which describe the final product and outline the work which would be required to complete it.

Homework 6.1
Complete your interview and submit the interview notes to the instructor. Turn in a preliminary draft of your Article. It does not need to be perfect, but, as before, it should be workable in order for you to receive feedback. Be ready to deliver a one-minute pitch of the Article to an editor.

Review two other students' Article drafts and provide detailed written feedback.
Homework 6.3
Submit three written questions for the guest speaker.
Homework 7.2
Turn in a one-page outline of three possible Final Projects explaining in detail what would be presented and what would be turned in.
Homework 7.3
Prepare to deliver a pitch for your Final Project. This should be no more than two minutes. You will describe your vision to the rest of the class, who will then provide feedback.
Homework 8.1
Turn in an outline and a timeline for your Final Project. The timeline should have precise dates by which you will complete intermediate tasks as you work towards handing in your Final Project.

Submit three written questions for the guest speaker.
Homework 9.1
Turn in a progress report on your Final Project. Explain what work you have accomplished, what must still be done, what difficulties you are facing, and how you need to update your timeline. Schedule a rehearsal of your Final Project presentation with the TA to take place during Week 9 (November 16–20). Include the appointment date and time in your progress report.
