WINTER

Max, hard at play, on our neighborhood playground, February 2002.

We started off 2002 with a bang, celebrating Max's 2nd birthday. Max's birthday was a big success -- although there was a noteable absence of balloons, largely due to a fear of inflatable objects he developed the previous spring where he had been terrified by a gigantic man-balloon (man dressed up in an inflatable fireman costume) who Max called "Jumbo Man."

Miranda continued to attend Barron Park pre-school (the school she'd been attending since she was two), where she developed her drawing, story-telling, and interpersonal skills.

Chris (fem) scrambled to reapply for her Stanford position, where she was capitalizing on her ongoing interest in pop culture by teaching writing courses on Images & Argument (if you follow the link, note the primitive state of web-site design here).

Chris (Smitty), almost a year into his return to CSA Engineering (after a brief foray into the world of Lockheed-Martin), continued to do what rocket-scientists do: work hard all day and then swim hard at night to relieve the tension.

As a family, we began the quest for the home of our dreams, placing a bid on our first house -- and losing it.

SPRING

During the spring, Miranda continued at Barron Park, Max played with his friends at his daycare, Chris taught writing and Victorian literature (note improved websites), and Smitt continued solving the world's vibration problems at CSA.

In May, we ventured east for our friend Cheryl Amitay's wedding (that's Auntie Cheryl around our house). Miranda and her mom both played starring roles -- Miranda as the flower girl and Chris as the minister (Universal Life Church, in case you were wondering). We saw many old Brown friends and even visited briefly in NY with our Alfano and Fairchild relatives. Then we jetted back to the West Coast, so Chris could finish up her quarter at Stanford.

At the end of the spring, Chris also received an official appointment at Stanford as a lecturer for the 2002-2003 school year -- her most permanent appointment since leaving her professorship at University of Colorado in 1998.

On the home front, spurred on by Chris's new job security, we continued our search for a house.

SUMMER

Chris & Chris ten years ago in Rye NY

At the end of June, Chris and Chris celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They marked the occasion with a low-key dinner with Max and Miranda and some reminiscing over old photos and incriminating wedding reception video.

It was also in June that Max joined Miranda's pre-school in June, and the two enjoyed a fun-filled two months learning and playing together at Barron Park. Miranda showed him the ropes - where to eat lunch, when to nap, how to face paint -- and in August, Miranda turned five years old, with much fanfare and a Princess-Mermaid party that started with a formal lunch in the park (crown required, but glass slippers optional) and then moved to the kid's pool at Palo Alto's Rinconada park. The only thing missing was our annual pinata -- but whacking a paper mache mermaid with a stick seemed a little perverse so we decided to refrain from the tradition all together.

Although Chris taught summer school, she, Max & Miranda still managed to make their semi-annual pilgrimage east to do what they affectionately call "The Grandparent Tour" up and down the northeastern seaboard. Highlights included a trip to Playland in Rye, NY; beach-outings to Rye Beach; and the visit to see Violet the pig in Bedford Massachussetts. Baby Sean was a big hit with Max and Miranda -- and left Chris pining for "number 3" (fortunately or unfortunately, Smitt and an increasingly demanding career have more or less ruled that option out).

Our search for hearth and home, continued, but after two more failed bids, we backed off somewhat during the summer.

FALL - through December

Max enjoying the great outdoors (5 minutes later he was completely naked).

We inaugurated the fall with the annual Barron Park Pre-School camping trip -- a trip to the Santa Cruz mountains attended by 90% of the school's families and teachers, filled with walks, s'mores, and rousing campfire renditions of "Baby Belluga" and "Ghostrider". Actually, the "we" mentioned was only Chris (fem), Miranda & Max -- although Smitt attended the evening dinner and marshmallow toasting, he headed down the mountain to his own bed afterward, holding firm to his "no-sleeping-outdoors" policy.

When we returned from the campout, Miranda officially graduated from Barron Park -- an occasion marked by songs, candle-lighting, and a necklace gifting ceremony.

That very day, Miranda started kindergarten at Laurel Elementary School in Atherton, California. After a rough first week, Miranda embraced her new school and her new teacher, Miss Owen (literally), and became fully integrated into the public school system: she can now recite the Pledge of Allegiance by heart (including the controversial "under God" line), which she typically ends with an "Amen", like a prayer. (And people say there's no blurring of church and state? -- okay, sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.)

Max continued on at Barron Park, at first missing his sister, but gradually thriving in his new independent identity.

Chris started up the new school year at Stanford, juggling Miranda's shortened schoolday, three classes, and a book project (to be published 2004). There was still some time to enjoy the perks of a collegiate autumn -- including a couple Stanford football games, where many of Chris's former students were starting.

At the games, both Chris and Chris enjoyed watching the Stanford band -- whose "free-form" approach to music reminded them of the good-old-days watching Brown band. Meanwhile, Max was alternately fascinated and petrified by Stanford's mascot, a dancing tree.

At Halloween, Max & Miranda opted for highly gendered costumes (despite their mother's coaxing otherwise) -- although Miranda went through two Rapunzel dresses in her rough-and-tumble approach to Halloween partying.

Who knew that Halloween would turn into such a social event? We attended two Halloween parties, two parades, and two other Halloween events. The kids' plastic jack-o-lanterns runneth over.

The new home of the Alfano/Smiths.

The Big News of the fall was that -- due primarily to Smitt's perseverance and faith -- we finally found a house. Our bid was accepted at the very end of October, and we moved into our new home the weekend before Thanksgiving.

The Christmas holidays find us sticking close to home this year -- although we sorely miss celebrating with our family back east. But for now, we're settling in and enjoying some nice evenings together by the fire, reflecting on all we have to be thankful for in 2002 and looking forward to a hectic but exciting 2003.

Happy New Year!
