STARTING A CLUB - THE BASICS

4. Advertising! Gettting Kids to Join Your Club

Now that you’ve got your club all set up, you want kids to join!  Here are some ways in which you can spread the word about your new club:

  • School newsletter:  Most elementary schools have a weekly or monthly newsletter that goes out to students and their parents, and you can contact the newsletter editor or school administrative staff and ask to put a blurb or flyer about the club in the newsletter.  The newsletter is also a good place to attach a permission slip or registration form for students.
  • School website:  Parents, and increasingly older elementary school students, visit the school website to find out about upcoming news and events.  Newsletters are often also posted online.  Posting information about your club on the school website is great for long-lasting publicity!
  • Local newspaper:  The local newspaper is also a good way to spread the word in a non-school setting.  The paper may even be interested in doing a small piece on your club!
  • Classrooms:  Talking directly to students in probably the most effective way to generate interest in your club.  Ask teachers if you can go their classrooms and give a quick presentation or skit, and bring flyers and permission slips so the kids can tell their parents about it!
  • Open house:  Open house is one of the most convenient ways in which you can talk directly to parents, and give them information about clubs or activities that their kids may be interested in.  Kids often forget to tell their parents about what goes on at school, so this is a great way to get connected directly to the parents.  In face-to-face conversation, parents can also discuss any concerns they may have about their children with you.
  • Talk to teachers:  It is important to let teachers be aware of your club, so they can tell their students about it and also talk to parents who trust the authority and advice of their child’s teacher.
