Stats 116: Introduction to Probability

John Duchi, Stanford University, Spring 2022

The examinations in the course consist of an in class midterm examination and an in person final exam.

Midterm

The midterm exam will be 55 minutes and in class. It will be closed notes and closed book, though it may still contain challenging material. The midterm will cover material from the first 20 lectures of the course and be on Tuesday, May 3.

Practice midterms

Spring 2022 midterm

  • Midterm: Spring 2022 midterm

  • Midterm solutions: Spring 2022 midterm solutions

  • The midterm statistics were roughly as follows:

    • The maximum possible score (without extra credit) was 57

    • The mean score was 47.4 and the median was 48, with a standard deviation of 9.7.

    • The maximum score was a 61.0

Final exam

The final exam will be a three (3) hour in person examination. Based on course voting, the format will be open notes, but closed book and closed computer. This means that you may bring any notes from the course, including print out outlines or lecture notes (we suggest in particular the overview/outline from lecture 38). The focus of the final will be a bit heavier on the last half of the course, though we expect you to know material from the entire course and are likely to include a few questions from the first five or so weeks of the course.

  • The final exam will be on Wednesday, June 8, 12:15 - 15:15, in the usual lecture room (380-380C).

  • We are offering an early final exam on Saturday, June 4, 8:30 - 11:30, in Sequoia Hall, room 200.
