Using PC-Leland with Outlook/Outlook Express and IMAP

If you do not have an IMAP email account, see the IMAP Email Service web pages at http:/imap.stanford.edu for information.

If you already have an IMAP email account, follow these instructions for configuring the email settings for your email client.

Step 1: Check PC-Leland's IMAP email settings.

a) In the PC-Leland Settings dialog box (right-click the PC-Leland icon and select Settings...) select Email from the settings options in the left pane.

b) Select canonical IMAP from the Email list and click the Properties button.

c) Enter the following settings for Leland IMAP Email Services:

  • Proxy type: IMAP
  • Use Canonical Server: On (checked)
  • Listen on port: 143
  • Server port: 143
  • User name: your SUNet ID
  • Encrypt Session: If this option is On (checked), the entire IMAP session will be encrypted, including all data sent between the client and server. With the option Off (unchecked), the actual messages are sent in the clear. IMAP does not provide any encryption on its data.

If you use a kerberized IMAP server other than Leland Email Services, the settings are as follows:

  • Proxy type: IMAP
  • Use Canonical Server: Off (unchecked)
  • Mail server: server name (enter the name of the IMAP server where you receive your mail)
  • Listen on port: 143
  • Server port: 143 (make sure this is the port number your IMAP server is actually listening on)
  • User name: your username
  • Encrypt Session: If this option is On (checked), the entire IMAP session will be encrypted, including all data sent between the client and server. With the option Off (unchecked), the actual messages are sent in the clear. IMAP does not provide any encryption on its data.

Step 2: Change the Incoming Mail Server in Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express to "localhost." Below are specific instructions for configuring Microsoft Outlook.

a) Select Accounts from the Tools menu.

b) Select the Mail tab. In the Account box, select the account you want to change. If you don't have an account set up in Outlook (i.e., the Account box is blank), see instructions for using the Internet Connection Wizard below. Note: Be sure to remove your old email account if you already had one set up in Outlook.

c) Click Properties, and then click the Servers tab, enter the following values and click OK.

  • My incoming mail server is a IMAP server
  • Incoming mail server: localhost
  • Outgoing mail server: smtp.stanford.edu
  • Account name: your SUNet ID
  • Password: Stanford (DO NOT enter your SUNet ID password because it will be stored on your computer)
  • Remember password: On (checked) (This will keep Outlook from popping up its own password dialog box each time you open the program).
  • Log on using Secure Password Authentication: Off (unchecked)
  • My server requires authentication: Off (unchecked)

d) For the changes to take effect, close down Outlook and re-open it.
