Such overuse irritates the flexor tendons and the tenosynovium surrounding them. They react to the irritation by becoming inflamed (shown in red in the illustration). This inflammation causes pressure on the median nerve, which consequently brings about the symptoms of CTS. Inflammation of the tenosynovium is called tenosynovitus.
