Fractures of the forearm and sprains or dislocations of the wrist can also cause CTS. Bones and ligaments shift in these injuries, which may result in changes in the shape of the carpal tunnel, and increased pressure on the median nerve.

Any other condition which results in pressure on the median nerve caused by swollen, enflamed or scarred tissue may induce CTS. Such conditions include:

  • Pregnancy (due to increased fluid retention, symptoms of CTS usually disappear after delivery)
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Menopause
  • Raynaud's disease
  • Obesity

If you have any of the above conditions, you are at increased risk for CTS.
