Other nerve disorders can cause tingling in the hands. One of the ways to distinguish CTS from other conditions is by the pattern of pain and numbness in the hand. The median nerve is not the only nerve to innervate the hand, but it is the only nerve to travel through the carpal tunnel. If tingling were due to a generalized nerve disorder, the whole hand would be affected. Remember that the median nerve innervates only the first four fingers. In CTS, the little finger remains tingle-free.
