Satellite Imagery, AI and Efficiency in Agricultural Water Use

The study evaluates a new artificial intelligence algorithm that can translate satellite imagery data to provide the types of information typically available from soil moisture sensors and other hardware. The satellite imagery application requires no hardware and the satellite resolution provides information that is “like having a soil moisture sensor every 30 feet” according to the developer, and founder of ConserWater, Aadith Moorthy. The imagery also provides plant moisture and health assessments. We intend to evaluate the effectiveness of ConserWater with farmers in California, India and other parts of the world to understand whether it may be an economical way to provide modern statistics about a farm to its owner or manager. By signing up for ConserWater, farmers can view what satellite imagery says about their farms and by checking the smartphone app regularly, they can see how that information varies over the growing season. The app also provides watering suggestions but farmers are encouraged to use this and the other data provided to adjust their irrigation as they see fit.
