Stanford Finishes 4th at Pacific Western 7′s Championship

University of Nevada-Reno – Reno, Nevada. - Saturday November 15, 2014

Stanford improved dramatically from the previous week’s Pac-12 7’s Championship, but lapses in intensity would eventually cost the Cardinal in two of their four matches at the Pacific Western 7’s Championship.  In their opening match of pool play, Stanford came out on fire and scorched UC Santa Cruz 33-5.  In Stanford’s second match of pool play, the Cardinal looked lethargic in the first half, leading to a quick 0-15 deficit to eventual champions Nevada-Reno.  Stanford would rally back to 14-15, but a late Nevada try sealed a 14-22 defeat for the Cardinal. In their 3rd pool play match, Stanford needed to beat a very strong UC Davis side for a chance at the Cup Final, and did so convincingly with a 17-7 victory in the Cardinal’s strongest 7’s performance of the season.  Unfortunately, the win wouldn’t be enough, as Nevada Reno went through to the final from Stanford’s pool.  In their final game in the 3rd place final, Stanford’s performance fell off, leading to defeat to San Jose State 12-15, and a 4th place finish with a 2-2 record.
