Stanford Defeats Chico in Season Finale

Stanford, California – Saturday April 7th

Stanford won the final game of the 2012 season by defeating Chico State 33-15. The match was Stanford’s 2nd victory over the Wildcats in 2012. In the first match, Stanford had to come from behind in dramatic fashion to win; in the second game it was Stanford who got out to an early lead. After twenty minutes of scoreless play that saw Stanford have the run of play in regards to territory and possession, Stanford finally broke the line in the 26th minute through a Zach Yohannes try. Stanford then began to pour on the pressure for the remainder of the half, which resulted in three more tries, two by Marcus Henderson and another by Orfeo Tagiuri. Jason Liljenquist converted three of the four tries, and Stanford had a commanding 26-0 lead at the break.

Despite the lopsided score line, Chico came climbing back into the game in the second stanza, and scored the first three tries (all unconverted) in the 45th, 50th, and 54th minutes to bring the score to 26-15 with a quarter of the game remaining. While Stanford remained on the back foot, they scrambled to prevent a few close Chico opportunities, and eventually turned the momentum tide behind a long Liam McNally try in the 74th minute, and the game finished minutes later with the Cardinal celebrating the seasons last game with a 33-15 victory
