Stats 117: Introduction to Probability

John Duchi, Stanford University, Spring 2026

The examinations in the course consist of an evening midterm examination and an in person final exam.

Midterm

The midterm exam will be 120 minutes in an evening in the middle of the quarter. The midterm will be on TBD in location TBD. You may bring a single 8.5“ by 11” sheet of paper with notes on either side as a cheat sheet.

Practice exams

Final exam

The final exam will be a three (3) hour in person examination. The focus of the final will be a bit heavier on the second half of the course, though we expect you to know material from the entire course and are likely to include a few questions from the first five or so weeks of the course.

Practice exams

Because this is a fairly new course, we do not have as many practice exams as in the past. We will provide a few practice finals, and we will also provide a list of problems from Blitzstein and Hwang's book that will provide reasonable practice for a final.

  • Practice problems from Blitzstein and Hwang's Introduction to Probability: 4.3, 4.38, 5.9, 5.19, 5.35, 6.10, 6.16, 9.2, 9.10.
Note that these likely are going to be harder than the actual final exam, but reviewing them will be helpful.
