Alumni Game!

The Stanford Women’s Rugby alumni walked confidently onto the pitch, promising a physical and dominating game. They hit the gaps with pace and drove powerfully in the rucks and scrums, disrupting the fast-paced game of the current players.

After battling with the dominating forwards on the alumni team, the current Stanford team managed to pass the ball to the open-side winger, Ono Nseyo, who ran under the posts for the opening try. The Cardinal alumni countered with ferocity, turning over the kickoff and attacking the blind side. Hall of Fame initiate, Jen Crawford was narrowly brought down two meters from the try line. The lineout led to a kick and a score in the corner for the current players. The tries were awarded to Ono Nseyo (2), Diana Peng (1); conversions by Melissa Smit (2).

In the second and third periods, additional players reinvigorated the alumni. The forwards disrupted many breakdowns for the younger Cardinal. These turnovers and successive offloads led to many forwards’ tries, including a break by Biscuit, the loose-head prop.

Another notable try is the “moon play,” which resulted in a score by fullback Kelsey Lynn. Recent Hall of Fame initiate, Jen Crawford, beat numerous defenders with quick side steps and bursts of speed. The tries were awarded to an unknown prop (1), Jen Crawford (3), Kelsey Lynn (2), Jenn Marino (1), Rose (1), Biscuit (2), Lizzy (1), Erica Hanson (2); conversion kicks by Bailey Sherlin (2), Jen Crawford (2).

All in all, the Stanford Women’s Rugby alumni followed through on their threat to dominate the Alumni Game. The current ruggers played with grit and heart, raising the standard that past players have set. Thank you to all the alumni for lacing your boots once again. We learned a great deal and look forward to a great season, celebrating 30 years of tradition with every game.
